Urgent Medication Facts

While opiate replacement medications such as Methadone and Suboxone are completely safe when used as prescribed and directed, there are some urgent facts about these medications that you should be aware of.  These medications are very effective in treating opiate addiction, but when used in a manner other than directed, they can become very dangerous.

Methadone and Suboxone are medications that are effective only for opiate addiction.  Your medication is for your use only.  Not only do state and federal laws forbid giving these medications to anyone else, anyone not prescribed these medications who takes them could experience great harm - potentially even death.  Both of these medications, when taken as prescribed, are safe, but to continue to abuse drugs while taking them can cause serious harm.  Illicitly taking medication (Valium or Xanax for example) while utilizing methadone or Suboxone for treatment could potentially result in unconsciousness or death.  This is also true of alcohol or any other "downer" when abused while you are in treatment.

In the early phase of treatment, these medications may cause you to feel drowsy or light-headed.  You should request increases of your dose only as you have need uring the initial phase of teratment as you seek to become stabilized on your dosage level.  Be sure of your alertness before you drive, use machines, or engage in any activity that requires clear-headed thinking.  Report to the medical staff, pharmacist, or your counselor if you have questions about how you feel or your adjustment to your medication.

Like any narcotic medication, it is imperative to take these medications as prescribed.  Taking more of your medication than prescribed could result in serious harm including death.

If you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, please provide this information to clinic staff and schedule to see the physician as soon as possible.
